Suffix of the Day: -CIDE

Suffix of the day:

-CIDE

From Latin, meaning "Killer".

HomiCIDE: The killing of a human.

PatriCIDE: The Killing of one's father.

FratriCIDE: The Killing of one's brother.

SuiCIDE: The killing of one's self.

RegiCIDE: The killing of a king.

Mnemonic:
Some actors would kill for an ICIDE (aside).

2 Speaky-backs (Comments):

  1. Left out familicide, and others (I imagine) as well.

  2. Many, many, MANY others: infanticide, insecticide, avicide, ovicide, etc. The wonderful thing about morphemes is that, by learning only a handful of prefixes, suffixes, and roots, we learn hundreds of words as well.

How many -icide words can you think of?

Here are some more of mine:

    avicide: the killing of birds.
ovicide: the killing of egg cells.
    insecticide: the killing of insects.
    biocide: the killing of life.
deicide: the killing of one's god.
    ceticide: the killing of whales.
    cytocide: the killing of cells.
    fungicide: the killing of fungus.
    pesticide: the killing of pests.
    herbicide: the killing of herbs.
